Benefits of Music Logic® Lessons

Typically students learn up to ten times more quickly. i.e. students are reading and playing complex music in a shorter time frame.

As well, students understand how the language of music works and as a result are able to compose structured music,
typically in their first year of lessons.

The Five C's Approach.

The Five C’s method of learning the piano has been developed in Melbourne since 1978 by John Barton, who, as a child, learnt to play piano by the traditional method. His memories of the sheer hard work and drudgery of hours of practicing scales, and his dissatisfaction with his inability to sight read led him to explore the possibility of a better method. A broken arm which prevented his practice, and gave him some spare time, led to the initial ideas..

Development of those initial ideas based on the five main “C” notes on the piano keyboard and a different perhaps revolutionary approach to the language of music, led to the present system which has made learning the piano fast, fun and fulfilling.

All the traditional musical knowledge is imparted to students. However, the sequence of learning is quite different, as is the overall approach to learning. Technically correct information is given to students so that they do not have to re-learn material when they choose to advance to higher levels. Standard music notation is used at all times.

The FIVE C's can be the location points on the music and on the keyboard. Any note in music can be no more than a fourth away from a C.

We don’t believe the old adage that practice makes perfect; we only ask our students to do 5 minutes improvement every day.

Students enjoy their lessons and quickly develop a varied repertoire of performance pieces that they enjoy performing at concerts for fellow students, family and friends.

Students who choose to sit for music exams obtain excellent results proportional to their preparation time.

In a remarkably short time you will be reading, playing, understanding and composing music using standard notation.

Statement of Belief

At Music Logic®, we believe that:

1. Everybody is inherently musical. Music making and music lessons should be fun and rewarding.

2. At least in the first 12 months of lessons there should be much exposure to many styles of music. e.g. Classic – Jazz – Pop.

3. Where appropriate students should be encouraged to prepare for and sit for exams.

4. Music Logic® lessons work well for all age groups – children – teenagers – adults – seniors.

TESTIMONIAL
My name is Peter Geoghegan. Born in Australia 1948. In my school years I took piano lessons and prepared for annual classical music exams with Australian Music Examination Board.

I reached level six. After leaving school I branched out in playing jazz music by listening to the great American players and studying jazz theory. I became a professional keyboard player at Night Clubs and Jazz Clubs in the city of Melbourne and was critically acclaimed as one of Australia’s leading performers of Jimmy Smith style of playing Hammond Organ Jazz.

In the early 1980’s I attended a three day Music Logic workshop led by John Barton in Melbourne for adults to learn to read and play piano. It was open to total beginners and people with previous experience.. I was astonished at how much the total beginners achieved in just three days. It seemed to me that it was the equivalent of about two years of conventional music lessons.

Music Logic achieves these extraordinary results by looking at the written language of music from a different angle. Students right from the start use intervals to help with pitch and harmony. This is a huge help for jazz as well as classical music.

I later attended a course for people like myself to become teachers of the Music Logic system. Students progress quickly in both performance, theory and passing exams.

The Music Logic style of theory is great for all music instruments.

TESTIMONIAL

My sister Shanti Bezard and I live in Albany, WA and have both been teaching piano to all ages for over 50 years.

We both qualified as school music specialists with the education dept in WA ,completed an AmusA in piano studies with the AMEB and began our piano teaching as a sideline to teaching music in schools.

While being successful piano teachers we were always open to new ideas to further enhance and refresh our work.

Shanti happened to hear something on the radio one day about an innovative new way of piano teaching created by John Barton from Melbourne. We were both very interested and attended a weekend workshop in Perth. We were so excited about this new approach that we then attended a full teacher training with John in Melbourne in January 1988.

John has a special way of imparting the beauty of music to his students.

Returning to Albany we began teaching using the “Music Logic” method and found it an exciting way to teach. It is wonderful to see the joy on the face of an adult who gave up lessons as a child and sees how this approach can open new doors for them and also to see how quickly children grasp the reading of patterns and how exciting scales and chords are.

Neither of us teach in schools any more but we have continued teaching piano and love

the Music Logic approach because of the simple, logical steps and the way it uses the patterns and landmark notes in the music to break down the structure and make it easier to read and understand
